Small tears and stains to edges. 27 x 37.5 cm Tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt discovered Belle-Île in 1894, at the age of 50. She had heard so much about it from her friend, the painter Clairin, that she finally decided to accompany him. It was love at first sight, and she bought a disused military fort at Pointe des Poulains. For the next thirty years, she would stay there every year, escorted by a host of artists and celebrities, to escape the hardships of Parisian life and relax.
