Jansenist midnight-blue Cape morocco signed Alix, gilt titled spine, wide gilt int. lace, gilt tr. on witnesses, cover boards cons. In bordered slipcase. Superb copy, very fresh inside. Partly original second edition, extensively revised and enriched with 35 new poems, the last to be published during the author's lifetime (and approved by him), and consequently much more accomplished than the 1857 original. Edition of 1500 unjustified copies, this one on wove paper, complete with the etched portrait of Baudelaire by Félix Bracquemond on chine appliqué, often missing, here in first state, before the mention "L'Artiste" above the portrait. Title printed in black and red. A first-edition copy, as evidenced e.g. by the misprints on pp. 20 (missing initial on l. 9) and 49 (idem on last l.). Ref.
