Recueillies et mises en forme par noble et discret missire Jehan de Bourdigne prestre, Docteur es droiticts, et depuis reveues et additionnees par le Viateur [Jean PELERIN]. Paris, Couteau & Angers, Clément, 1529. In-folio, brown calf, ribbed spine decorated with gilt small irons, gilt fillets framing the covers with motifs in spandrels and central medallion, gilt edges (period binding). Fine edition in Gothic type of this famous chronicle of Anjou, composed by Canon Jean de Bourdigné and completed by a fellow Angevin by the name of Jean Pélerin, known as the Viator, the author of the famous Livre de perspective. The illustration features a handsome title in red and black, set in a large architectural frame by Galliot du Pré with the shield of France on the reverse, a large full-page woodcut depicting the author offering his book to Louise de Savoie, mother of François I, a woodcut in the text showing the Trojans building the city of Angers, a number of other woodcuts in the text, numerous lettering and Galliot du Pré's mark on the last leaf. A unique work by Jean de Bourdigné, who was born in Angers towards the end of the 15th century and died there in 1547; doctor of law, canon of Saint-Laud and then Saint-Maurice. This chronicle, which stretches from the time of the Flood to 1529, is recognized as a valuable historical source in its final chapters (he has personal memories and information on events close to him: his father was in Ravenna, and he witnessed the King's entry into Angers in 1518). Naturally, he expands on the people and things of Anjou. He insists on the acts of Louise de Savoie, to whom the book is dedicated as Duchess of Anjou). A fine copy presented here in its rare period binding, which has been skilfully and recently restored. The text has been previously washed but has retained excellent inking. Restorations in the upper and lower parts of the title page and in the upper margins of leaves III, IV, VIII to XI, XXXIII, XXXIV, XXXIX, XL, XLV & XLVI are to be noted. & XLVI. without missing, restorations to leaves XCIX. & C with loss of a few letters on the sur-title but without affecting the text, and a wormhole in the sur-title over most of the work, more pronounced on the last 10 leaves (but still without affecting the text).
