In which the old denominations have been preserved for the study of History. 1814. A Paris chez Basset, Md d'Estampes, rue St Jacques, N° 64. Copperplate engraving, size 69.5 x 49.5 cm. Map of France, departmental boundaries enhanced in color. Two side columns feature portraits of the kings of France: "Chronologie des Rois de France / Depuis Pharamond / Jusqu'au Roy régnant / Louis XVIII". State of the Kingdom of France under Louis XVIII. This geographical presentation is tinged with an intolerant historical legitimism: it passes cheerfully from Louis XVI to Louis XVII and Louis XVIII, neglecting Revolution and Empire! A fine print, despite fold marks and two pale brown spots.

Geographical lottery (France, circa 1875) Geographical lottery (France, circa 1875). Wood-cardboard box, size 41.4 x 29 x 6 cm. Gilded globe and title on lid, embossed frame. The interior is divided into three compartments, containing: 24 game cards, oblong format 26.5 x 12 cm / 90 numbered boxwood counters / a wicker basket with bone tokens. The playing cards have two useful sides. One is a classic lotto board, in black, with fifteen numbers; the other has fifteen lithographed and colored squares, each assigned to a department, including Algeria: name of the department and capital, pictorial representation of a famous local child or local production or building. Boxwood pieces feature a number and the name of a département. The game can be played in two different ways: one is the most ordinary lotto game, where only the numbers are taken into account; the other is more educational, using the name of the département as a starting point from which players discover the name of the chief town and local specialities; the first is a little sad, the second is more cheerful, using the coloured side of the cards, which are very attractively decorated, no doubt to show children that education is a pleasure! Note that the game was published after the defeat of 1870, and the lost départements are depicted in mourning, in black on a blue-grey background. Each illustrated square features two three-digit numbers, the meaning of which remains a mystery. The cover is a little soiled, with some flaws on the edge.

Walter on the lid, printed by Engelmann: rich architectural and floral decoration with cartouches; the central title is flanked by two women, one representing Industry, the other Commerce; in each corner is a figurative representation of four rivers (Seine, Thames, Neva, Danube), each corresponding to a vignette next to it showing a city view (Paris, London, St. Petersburg, Vienna). The box contains eight cards, lithographed and colored, glued to wood and cut into jigsaw puzzles. Geographical puzzle game. The eight maps represent Asia, Europe, France, South America, North America, Africa, Oceania and the world map in two hemispheres. These maps are taken from the Gosselin-Delamarche atlas. The set is in fine condition; a small piece is missing from the map of France.
