Antique Reception of Dying Gauls around 1900, unsigned, lightly patinated bronze, version of the marble sculpture now in the Capitoline Museums in Rome, the work is a copy of the sculpture that was commissioned around 230/220 BC, probably in bronze, by Attalus I., the king of Pergamon, which stood in the sanctuary of Athena in Pergamon, documenting his victory over the Celts (Gauls). The name of the artist is unknown, but the work is sometimes attributed to an Epigonos (Pliny the Elder: "Tubic"). Elder: "Tubicen"), who was court sculptor in Pergamon at the time of Attalus, an extremely striking depiction of a prostrate, unclothed, athletic young man, a fragment of rope looped around his neck, a wound mark on his right breast, a sword with severed sword belt and two war horns beside him, on an irregular, oval plinth, patina partially rubbed, l approx. 47 cm.
