The People of India, c. 1868-1875. Lama (Buddhist preast). A charcoal carrier. Kachari. Weavers. Magar group. Lepcha peasants. Baories. Bujgotees. Boksa. Jogis. Rajah. Kurrum doss. Cheboo lama. Chohans. Singpho. 31 albumen prints, mounted on cardboard (most with captions on leaves). Legends on labels mounted on the mount. Sizes : from 18x13 to 19x18 cm This ethnographic study was published in eight volumes between 1868 and 1875 by J. Forbes Watson and John William Kaye. It comprises over 460 plates, the aim of which was to depict the Indian population. The Governor General of India, Lord Canning, commissioned more than fifteen British army officers, including Shepherd and Robertson and Lieutenant W. W. (Willoughby Wallace) Hooper, to photograph the country's topology, architecture and population.
