In a palace interior with columned architecture, a young woman is being prepared for a wedding night by a servant, the noble husband is being dressed up by his servant boys. In 1660 Charles Lebrun created his Alexander cycle, which mirrored the work of Louis XIV in that of the Macedonian king Alexander the Great and thus celebrated Louis XIV as the New Alexander. This "antique" context also includes the present painting, which is an important work of Neoclassical painting under Louis XIV and is very revealing of the reception of antiquity in the Baroque period.
