School of arts in Bombay. He was the founder of the Progressive artist group (including Husain, Ara, Gade, Bakre, then Ram Kumar, Akbar Padamsee and Tyeb Mehta). Initially influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Post-Impressionism during his early years in Paris, he produced numerous landscapes of remarkable chromatic intensity. He gradually replaced figurative elements with a more symbolic, abstract, codified language, inspired by the Tantric paintings of his native land.
