Sayed Haider RAZA (1922-2016) Cantique, 1971 Oil on canvas Signed lower right 65 x 53 cm Framed Referenced under number 1187 in the archives of the Raza Foundation - Gorbio PROVENANCE - Vernissage Raza - Restaurant Le Totem, Palais Chaillot - Private collection NOTICE A painter of worldwide renown, he studied at the Nagour School of Fine Arts and then at the J.J. School of arts in Bombay. He was the founder of the Progressive artist group (including Husain, Ara, Gade, Bakre, then Ram Kumar, Akbar Padamsee and Tyeb Mehta). Initially influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Post-Impressionism during his early years in Paris, he produced numerous landscapes of remarkable chromatic intensity. He gradually replaced figurative elements with a more symbolic, abstract, codified language, inspired by the Tantric paintings of his native land.
