BURMA, 19th centuryYama Dharmaraja Two fragments of a Burmese parabaik Polychrome pigments and gold on paper. 69.7 x 50 cm and 84 x 50 cm These two sections of a large Burmese folding manuscript, known as a parabaik, painted in polychrome and gold on thick paper, depict numerous figures in procession, with horses, elephants and chariots in a verdant landscape. Yellow margins border the fragments, and one features a Burmese inscription at the bottom. The parabaik tradition began in the mid-18th century. Initially court orders, they were later widely commissioned by the Burmese wealthy classes to commemorate religious events and various processions.
