Ɏ YASUCHIKA: AN IVORY NETSUKE OF KANZAN AND JITTOKU READING A MAKIMONO By Yasuchika, signed Yasuchika 安親 Japan, 19th century Humorously carved as the two famous immortals Kanzan (Hanshan) and Jittoku (Shide), each with one foot flat on the ground, and the other raised and supported on their companion’s ankle, evoking the illusion that the two immortals share one pair of legs. Dressed in finely carved and voluminous robes with long draping sleeves, the immortals’ facial expressions are carved with wisdom and humor as they study an open scroll. Generously excavated, asymmetrical himotoshi to the back and signed YASUCHIKA – the artist appears to be unrecorded but is likely from the Tomochika school of carvers. HEIGHT 9.8 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. One sleeve with minor fritting along the edge. Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm Collection, Paris. Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number FR2307517333-K). This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU.
