[BÉROALDE de VIERVILLE (François). Le Moyen de parvenir, containing the reason for all that has been, is & will be. Last edition. Exactement corrigée, & augmentée d'une Table des matières. Nulle part [Hollande], sn, 1000700407 [1747]. 2 volumes in-12, brown half calf spotted with small corners, title and tomaison pages (contemporary binding). Several restorations to bindings. Minor gnawing to first endpapers of volume I. Good Dutch edition of this "sottisier". Le Moyen de parvenir is a repertory of light-hearted tales and quips from which not only Tabarin and the pseudo-Bruscambille, but also d'Aubigné in his Baron de Faeneste, and Sorel in his Francion, have drawn. "The Moyen de parvenir is generally attributed to François Beroalde de Verville, author of the various works we have just described, which are now almost forgotten; in fact, Beroalde declared himself to be its father on page 461 of his Palais des Curieux printed in 1612 (see below), while disavowing, out of caution, the surreptitious copies that had spread. Despite this, several modern critics dispute his authorship of the book, giving it to either Fr. Rabelais or Henri Estienne, from whom Beroalde did in fact frequently borrow (especially from the latter's Apologie pour Hérodote, which, incidentally, had died before Beroalde's book was published). For his part, the author of Mélanges tirés d'une grande bibliothèque, volume P., p. 163, doubts that "this collection of facetiae and tales, sometimes very pleasing and always very free, is actually by Beroalde, canon of Tours. Beroalde's name is found at the head of a book entitled du Moyen de parvenir. The book in question is little known, and neither La Monnoye nor P. Niceron have mentioned it. Its title is De la Sagesse [...] But what is perhaps even less well known than this last work is the first edition of the famous Moyen de parvenir. [...] It is to be regretted that La Monnoye, to whom we owe a good notice on Beroalde's collection, did not examine the first editions, which were more readily available in his time than they are today.
