Report on Laplace's second expedition, whose aim was commercial and diplomatic. Leaving Toulon on January 20, 1837, Laplace first went to New York on a successful mission of representation. He then headed south to the Indian Ocean. He sailed up the Red Sea (Moka), then visited Muscat, Pondicherry, Ceylon, Singapore, Batavia, Cochinchina, the Chinese coast, Australia, Tasmania, Tahiti, the Hawaiian Islands, California, Peru and Brazil. He returned to Lorient on April 15, 1840. On board L'Artémise was Lieutenant Pâris: during the voyage, he made numerous scientific observations and compiled sketches and watercolors for his Essai sur la construction navale des peuples extra-européens (1843).
