Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1841. 3 volumes (out of 6) in-8, havana half calf, smooth spine decorated, title and appendices (period binding). Joints rubbed, headbands restored. Only the first three volumes of the rare first edition illustrated with 2 engraved and colored folding maps (world map and map of British India) and 17 engraved plates out of text (7 in the first volume, 4 - out of 5 - in the second volume - the view of the oil mill at Agaléga is missing, 6 in the third volume). Azores, Canary Islands, Africa, Senegal, Goree, Sierra Leone, Cape of Good Hope, Bourbon Island, Ile de France, India (Trinquemalay, Karikal, Goudelour, Pondicherry, Madras, Calcutta), Sumatra, Ceylon, Malabar Coast, Goa, Central Asia, Diu, Red Sea and Persian Gulf (Muscat, Bender-Abbas, Ormus and Moka). Report on Laplace's second expedition, whose aim was commercial and diplomatic. Leaving Toulon on January 20, 1837, Laplace first went to New York on a successful mission of representation. He then headed south to the Indian Ocean. He sailed up the Red Sea (Moka), then visited Muscat, Pondicherry, Ceylon, Singapore, Batavia, Cochinchina, the Chinese coast, Australia, Tasmania, Tahiti, the Hawaiian Islands, California, Peru and Brazil. He returned to Lorient on April 15, 1840. On board L'Artémise was Lieutenant Pâris: during the voyage, he made numerous scientific observations and compiled sketches and watercolors for his Essai sur la construction navale des peuples extra-européens (1843).
