James A. Seddon War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed, Approving a "passport through the lines to the United States" Former Democratic congressman (1815-1880) who served as Confederate Secretary of War. Civil War-dated LS, one page, 9 x 7.75, Confederate States of America (War Department) letterhead, April 9, 1864. Handwritten letter to General Winder, in full: “Give Mr. Ludwig Schulz a passport through the lines to the United States, taking his parole of honor not to reveal anything prejudicial to the Confederate cause.” In fine condition, with light show-through along the bottom edge from old mounting remnants on the back.

In-8, tan boards, red title page, speckled edges (modern binding). Rare first French edition of Letters from Illinois, published in Philadelphia in 1818, and illustrated with a folding engraved map. Born into a family of Quakers, the author emigrated with his family to the United States in 1817, founding an agricultural colony in the state of Illinois. This collection of letters includes his correspondence during his first year with friends and future settlers. It contains a wealth of practical information about his life and the conditions of his settlement. A good copy. Some spotting at the beginning of the volume.

North America - CHANNING (William Ellery). De l'esclavage. Paris, Charpentier, 1866. In-18, brown cloth, smooth spine, black title page, covers preserved (modern binding). First French edition. It is preceded by a preface and a study of slavery in the United States by Édouard Laboulaye, and is followed by Remarques sur la question de l'esclavage, and Lettres à M. Clay sur l'annexion du Texas aux États-Unis. A good copy. Some foxing.

Paris, Didier, 1851. 2 vol. in-8, havana half-maroquin, spine ribbed with gilt triple-filleted boxes, gilt title and tomaison, place and date on tail, combed edges (C. Hardy). 2 frontispiece portraits (George and Martha Washington), one hors texte plate and a large folding map in fine. Pronounced foxing in places, otherwise a very fine copy. Engraved bookplate (engraved name).
