Description

The Prince of Thebes. A book of stories. Lpz., Vlg. der weißen Bücher 1914. 98 p., 1 With 25 illustrations on 24 plates after drawings by the poet on plates as well as 3 pochoir colored plates after drawings by Franz Marc. 98 p., 1 leaf. Illustrated wrappers (edges frayed, partly with tears and mostly only small tears, spine with losses, creases, browned and slightly speckled). Wilpert-Gühring² 945, 11. Raabe 182, 10. Feilchenfeldt-Brandis 119.VII, note First edition. - Franz and Maria Marc met at the end of 1912. She had previously been married to Herwarth Walden. Their acquaintance was preceded by a lively correspondence between Prince Jussuf von Theben (Elke Lasker-Schüler) and the Blauer Reiter (Franz Marc). The charming three plates with watercolors by Franz Marc, carefully heightened in pochoir color, show a yellow horse in a hail of red arrows, four blue horses in a forest and mountain landscape as well as the adorable red calf: "This holy calf was found sleeping in the palace garden on the day of King Jussuf's accession to the throne". - A few insignificant traces of compression, occasional brownstaining and browning, only minimal stains. Here with the often missing third colored plate. Slightly browned in lower margin.
