Le tout tiré des livres des gages de la Chambre des Comptes, Extraordinaire des guerres, manuscrits tant de la Bibliothèque du Roi, que des particuliers. I. Containing the Gardes du Corps and Gendarmes de la Garde. - II. Containing the horse-lighters of the Guard, the two companies of the Musketeers, the mounted Grenadiers, and all the gendarmerie. - III. Containing the Gardes Françoises and the Gardes Suisses. Liege, Kints,, 1734-1735. 3 vol. in-4, marbled calf, ornate ribbed spines, double gilt fillet on the edges (period binding). Unique edition of this now exceedingly rare book, which was already uncommon in its day. It is illustrated with a frontispiece equestrian portrait, 44 fine vignettes on the head, most of them depicting battle scenes, and 644 coats of arms engraved in the text. Le Pippre de Noeuville, canon of Liège, has written an excellent compilation, abounding in genealogical and heraldic details of families who served in the gendarmerie, the French guards and the Swiss guards (Saffroy I, 14875). A very fine copy, perhaps belonging to the author (or at least to one of his relatives): it is enriched with numerous handwritten notes in pen in the margins and on loose leaves, correcting dates, commenting, adding information, etc.
