[Travel - Navy]. PARIS (Admiral). The work of François Roux representing the portraits of the ships of the French Navy from 1792 to the present day. Paris, Liébert, 1885. In-4° oblong, half bradel purple cloth (period binding). Copious historical and descriptive note with numerical tables by Admiral Paris followed by 78 (out of 79, the last one is missing) full-page photographs of French ships by A. Liébert. A very good copy. (Polak, 7340). Provenance: Duke of Elchingen, Prince of Moskowa, (armorial bookplate).

[PARIS (Léon)]. Souvenir de la Bellone. 1870-71-72. Paris, A. Cadart, sd (c. 1875). In-4, title and 40 etched plates, signed, partly numbered and generally captioned, olive half-chagrin, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, red speckled edges (modern binding). Extremely rare suite documenting an Atlantic crossing of the Bellone, a 38-gun frigate in service with the Imperial (then National) Navy from 1853 to 1877. Léon Pâris, who signed all the plates, is most probably Prosper-Léon Pâris (1847-1900), younger son of the famous vice-admiral François-Edmond Pâris (1806-1893), who in 1872 served on the frigate La Bellone as executive officer to Rear-Admiral Siméon Bourgois, Commander-in-Chief of the South Atlantic Naval Division. The engravings are mainly devoted to Africa, but also include images of South America, Oceania and Europe (detailed list of plates available on request). Polak, 7346 and 7347, mentions only the last part of this suite, published under the title Vie du Marin, whose two editions include 9 and 16 engravings respectively.
