Aguttes auction house will offer on 13 June, at Drouot, The peasans wedding, painted on panel by Pieter BRUEGHEL THE YOUNGER (1564-1636).
Popular weddings were quite appreciated by the artist. He painted a few versions of this subject but this oil on panel is the unique known copy dated 1615. This painting epitomizes Flemish Art History of the period.
At the center of the composition, among many characters and humoristic details, a bride indicates the reason for the party. The “queen of the day”, seated under a makeshift crown, is mischievously watching guests filling up the plate in front of her with money.
Pieter II Brueghel the Younger is from a Dutch dynasty of artists. After studying in Anvers and being becoming a Master in 1585, he takes a flourishing studio in charge. Like his father, he paints a lot of rural and cave scenes in the Dutch Realistic style. The artwork featured in this auction is estimated between €600,000 and 700,000.
