JEAN-MARC DELVAUX - €194,060 for a Jiaqing vase (1796-1820)

Friday 29 June 2018
Expert: Cabinet Portier

Among the Asian works of art offered by auction house Jean-Marc Delvaux on Friday 29 June, a Jiaqing (1796-1820) white-glazed polychrome painted porcelain vase was acquired at €194,060*, over three times its low estimate. (Lot n° 415)

The open pomegranate is the main focus of the decor, standing as an image for the hope of many heirs. The pomegranate is one of the Emperor’s favourite theme. It is notably found in the wooden decorations of his summer palace. The association of lotus and pomegranates means « May you give birth to sons continuously », the pomegranate’s grains symbolising the sons, the lotus “lian” meaning “continuous”.
