DE BAECQUE - €1,4M for the collection of Michel and Catherine Andrault

Offered by auction house De Baecque & Associés, the collection of Michel and Catherine Andrault, on 25 and 26 June, totalled €1,240,900*, largely exceeding its global estimate. Numerous collectors and connoisseurs came to this sale and nearly 165 bidders followed it online through Drouot Digital. Americans, Europeans and Asians participated to this two-day sale marked by many bidding battles.

 Success for the African and Oceanic Arts 

Several important works were from New Ireland. The highly awaited Matua Mask from the former collections of the Übersee-Museum in Bremen (lot 66) reached €77,500*. Several other pieces held the interest of bidders: the Malagan Sculpture collected during the expedition of La Korrigane in 1935 (lot 47) reached €62,500*, and a Matua Mask from the Stuttgart or Leipzig Museum (lot 53) was acquired for €42,500*. Other pieces, sold successfully including the Kepong Mask (lot 52) which sold for €106,250*, against an initial estimate of €20,000-30,000.

Heading to Africa!

The Andrault Collection stood out through its exceptional group of Mumuye works. Amazed by these dancing sculptures full of inventiveness, Michel Andrault was considered one of the most aware collector in this domain. Several Mumuye statues resulted in successful bidding battles: lot 100 was acquired for €25,000*, lot 141 for €35,000*, lot 156 for €14,375 €* and lot 209 for €20,000*. Elsewhere in the sale, the connoisseurs did not miss out an important pair of Jukun statues (lot 122) sold for €37,500*.

Asian and Indian Arts 

This section’s highlight was an important sculpture of "Vajra Vaharani" (lot 341) that kept the public and the bidders waiting. Reaching €60,000, only a few sculptures dated from this period remains in a good condition.
