Expert: Cabinet Éric Turquin

On Friday 22 June, an important sale by auction house Audap & Mirabaud achieved €1,3M*, highlighting with success the17th and 18th centuries old masters. A beautiful Still life with sandstone jug by Flemish artist Jan Jansz Van de VELDE III (1620-1662), estimated €150,000-200 000*, reached €842,860*, setting a new world auction record for a work by the artist. Elsewhere in the sale, A caravan by François BOUCHER (1703-1770) sold for €263,120*.

The vertical format and great simplicity of Still life with sandstone jug, executed in 1650, are typical of the artist’s work from this date until his death. The subject recalls the Tabagie subjects of Jan TRECK (1606-1652), Pieter VAN ANRAEDT (1635-1678) and most of all Jan FRIS (1627-1672). This painting depicts a sandstone jug from the German city of Westwald, with the coat of arms of Amsterdam, called wapenkruik (jug with coats of arms), a small blaze containing ember, a pack of tobacco and a long pipe displayed on a wooden table. The use of tobacco, very common in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries but condemned in Catholic countries, was tolerated in Protestant lands.

François Boucher paints this Caravan in 1725, before his departure for Italy in the spring of 1728. The oil on canvas prefigures pastorals – thematic created by the artist in which shepherds are gathered around fountains – executed when returning from Rome. The freshness of colors in a Venetian style shows the influence of his master François LEMOYNE (1688-1737) and the dynamism of Benedetto CASTIGLIONE (1609-1664)’s composition, a 17th century painter from Genoa.
