Friday 18 May 2018
On Friday 18 May, 7 fresh to the market works by Frank OVERTON COLBERT (1895-1953) from an American collection were sold by auction house Ader. Selling successfully, it confirms the great talent of the little-known artist on the art market. Nicknamed the “Redskin of Montparnasse”, the group reached €160,000 (incl. premium), doubling its estimate.

The Origin of Birds, an oil on cardboard, circa 1921, was sold for €43,750 (incl. premium). This work was estimated €12,000 –15,000. (Lot n° 33) The Origin of Design, an oil on canvas board, also executed circa 1921 and estimated €12,000–15,000, found a new owner at €28,750 (incl. premium). (Lot n° 32) The Undersea God, with the same technical characteristics and estimates as the previous ones, was acquired for €26,250 (incl. premium).

Frank Overton Colbert (1895-1953) is the first artist descended from Chickasaw chiefs to be featured in New York in the 20’s. His nickname the “Redskin of Montparnasse” came when he settled in Paris. The 70 works that are known to be by him revive some Indian-American myths while adding Parisian and New Yorker modernist movements.

These works were offered in an impressionist and modern art sale which totalled €1,2M. A painting on silk by Vietnamese artist NGUYEN Phan Chanh (1892-1984) was notably acquired for €300,000 (incl. premium).
