On the upcoming 3 May at Drouot, at the occasion of an Oriental Art and Orientalism sale, Millon’s Civilisation department will offer 335 lots at auction: paintings, manuscripts, books, jewelry, ceramics, furniture, textiles and astronomical instruments. The global estimate of the sale is €750,000.
The sale will open on a chapter dedicated to Orientalist painters. Among the highlights, a painting titled Le vieil écrivain traditionnaliste du désert, signed by Etienne DINET (1861-1929), key figure of the orientalist movement, is estimated €15,000-25,000 (lot 28).
The production of Russian painter Alexander ROUBTZOFF (1884-1949) will be represented through nearly twenty works, executed between 1916 and 1934. One of the most important work is a luminous oil on canvas entitled Le Tombeau des Beny Djellab, roi de Touggourt, estimated €5,000-7,000 (lot 81).
The work of Mohamed BEN ALLAL (1924 -1995) will illustrate contemporary creation, with an ensemble of paintings from a private collection. Marrakchi autodidact artist, he largely contributed to spreading Moroccan contemporary painting across the globe (lots 95 to 103, with estimates ranging from €300 to €4,000).
The second part of the auction will be dedicated to books and manuscripts. It features nearly fifty books, including a remarkable Persian « Book of the Kings » dated from 1612 and copied by Abd al-Rahim al-Katib, a famous calligrapher from the Court of Mughal Emperor Akbar. This rare piece ordered for the Jahangir treasure, fourth Emperor of the Mughal Dynasty which reigned over India from the 16th to the au 19th century, is estimated €50,000- 60,000 (lot 227).
Finally, astronomical instruments will be beautifully represented. Two calculation sundials Qibla indicators with compass, will be notably offered, estimated €4,000-6,000 each. A Qajar celestial brass globe (lot 217), will also be offered at auction. This Iranian sphere circa 1800, is delicately executed, stands as a valuable work of art and is estimated €8,000-12,000.
