ANTWERP SCHOOL (2nd THIRD 16th century) "The Descent" Oil on panel The composition of this work has its origin in “The Descent” by Roger van der Weyden (1399-1464) although through the interpretation that Joos van Cleve (c. 1485–1540-41) made and preserved in the Philadelphia Museum (oil on panel, 116.2 × 126.7 cm, cat.737). This panel differs from van Cleve's composition by the more animated and exaggerated character of the characters, which recall the painters active in Antwerp in the second third of the 16th century, and more specifically, the works of Pieter Coecke van Aelst ( 1502-1550). Trained with Bernard van Orley in Brussels, in 1527 van Aelst was already registered in the Guild of Painters of Saint Luke in Antwerp, where he settled and married Anna van Dornicke, daughter of the painter Jan van Dornicke, who left him a legacy. important workshop with extensive production. A large number of painters were trained here who worked in the style of van Aelst, first, more influenced by van Orley and van Dockenie, to later approach Italian mannerism, as in this case. The present work could therefore be attributed to the circle of Pieter Coecke van Aelts, without ruling out the master's authorship. Measurements: 68 x 85 cm
