The whole is constructed in four levels.
The separate top section is a niche-shaped section with set in the niche a youthful Hercules? (Diomedes?) The whole is supported by two caryatids. At the top left and right flower vases after the antique and centrally mounted with two putti holding a cartouche.
The second section consists of a left and right niche with a flat space in between that in its centre is inlaid with a basso-relievo carved plaque depicting Adam and Eve, reproved by the punishing God. Both niches are mounted with putti and in between them a coat of arms that on both the left and right is held by two griffins. The columns with a Doric-inspired capital.
The middle section, supported by fluted columns also with a Doric-inspired capital, consists of a central door that is set with a particularly beautiful alto-relievo carved plaque depicting 'The Triumph of Galatea' after Raphael. This central part is flanked by two niches containing a different interpretation of the goddess Euterpe. In the broken pediment above and above the plaque a bust. Female caryatids on both sides. The inner part behind the door is soberly decorated with mirrors and left and right are doors that give access to the space behind the niches. Under the cornice a decoration of dental moulding. At the base of this section are three drawers, the pull of which is conceived as a satyr seated on a monster.
The lower part is console-shaped with a sober rear that is decorated with veneered geometric mitre work.
The sides are kept plain. The whole stands on whimsical acanthus sculpted legs.
The entire piece of furniture is decorated with ivory arabesques and grotesques.
The back: top rail is severely eaten by woodworm, the problem seems to be solved and the holes are filled with a red coloured paste / the right panel of the top part bears a paper label with text (see the attached transcription) / the right panel of the lower part has slightly loosened.
According to documents provided by the former owner, the item was sold as lot 400 'An Italian ebony cabinet' on November 28th, 1918 at Rotherwood, West Field Road, 4, Edgbaston, Birmingham. There seems to be a possibility (which isn't at all sure) that it formerly belonged to the 5th duke of Northumberland.
