LANA TERZI, Francesco. Prodromo overo saggio di alcune inventioni nuove premesso all' arte maestra. Brescia, Rizzardi, 1670 Folio. 310x230 mm. Legatura coeva in cartonato alla rustica. Pagine (8), 252. 20 tavole incise in rame a piena pagina in fine. Grandi capilettera e finalini xilografati. Sul frontespizio ex libris ovale in inchiostro nero con iniziali “C B”. Macchie e tracce d’uso alla legatura, internamente sporadico lieve foxing e qualche traccia d’uso, buon esemplare con ampi margini. Prima rara edizione di quest’opera pioneristica nella storia dell’aeronautica. Lana fornisce un'ampia descrizione di invenzioni e innovazioni tecnologiche. Tra le altre troviamo: microscopi, igrometri, orologi, pompe idrauliche, un nuovo tipo di termometro, un metodo di scrittura cifrata, un sistema per insegnare a scrivere ai ciechi, un metodo per produrre colori. La più significativa è quella relativa alla costruzione di una ''nave, che camini sostentata sopra l’aria''. Se ne descrivono tutti i particolari costruttivi ed è illustrata dalla famosa tavola. Una sua analisi comparve, nel 1679, nelle Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, e G.W. Leibniz la descrisse dettagliatamente nella Hypothesis physica nova (Magonza 1671) e poi ne trattò nella corrispondenza intrattenuta con il Lana Terzi. Dibner: “the earliest concept of flight based on aerostatic principles”. Norman: “While Lana apparently originated the method of reducing air density in a vessel by heating it, the implications of this phenomenon in relation to flight were not fully understood until the advent of the Montgolfier brothers a century later” Riccardi: “Rara e pregiata opera”. On the title page, an oval ex-libris in black ink with the initials “C B”. Stains and tears to the binding, internally occasional slight foxing and some signs of wear, good copy with wide margins. Rare first edition of this pioneering work in the history of aeronautics. Lana provides an extensive description of inventions and technological innovations. Among others we find: microscopes, hygrometers, clocks, water pumps, a new type of thermometer, a method of cipher writing, a system for teaching the blind to write, a method for producing colours. The most significant is that relating to the construction of a ''ship, which chimneys are supported above the air''. All the construction details are described and it is illustrated by the famous plate. An analysis of him appeared, in 1679, in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, and G.W.
