First edition, signed by the author, of this historical novel on which Scorsese based the 1988 Oscar-nominated film of the same name. It is a reinterpretation of the Gospels that sees a much more human Christ who is constantly subject to temptation. The book was banned by the Church. 8vo, (208 x 136mm). Text in Greek, author's signature to penultimate page (some light wear). Half-calf binding, title gilt directly to spine (spine almost completely detached, some wear).
