DELISLE, Guillaume (1675-1726). Atlante novissimo. Venice: Albrizzi, 1740-1750. A fine, rare Venetian atlas with contemporary hand-colouring, issued by the publisher Albrizzi using the maps of de L'Isle (1675-1726), the famous French cartographer of Louis XIV who had learnt first from his father Claude (1644-1720), historian of the royal house, and completed his training with Jean-Dominique Cassini (1625-1712). The accompanying texts are translated from the Dutch edition published by Covens and Mortier in Amsterdam in 1733, itself derived from Sanson's Atlas Nouveau of 1708. Folio, (380 x 260mm). Allegorical half-titles, title-pages printed in red and black, 78 double-page geographic maps divided as follows: 34 plate maps in the first volume, 44 in the second volume of which 23 with partial contemporary hand-colouring of cartouches and 4 almost entirely watercoloured (light waterstains to lower margin of text maps in the second volume and marginal dampstaining to the last two maps). Twentieth-century style vellum-backed boards. (2)
