PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778). Della magnificenza ed architettura de Romani. Rome, 1761. [BOUND WITH:] Osservazioni .. sopra la Lettre de m. Mariette. Rome, 1765. Della Magnificenza ed Architettura de Romani (Of the Magnificence and Architecture of the Romans) is not only a masterfully illustrated work, but also has strong intellectual and even polemical significance given the context in which it appears. Piranesi's stance here is more direct than in his previous work: his challenge is to reaffirm the technical genius of Roman antiquity in the face of a number of historians and intellectuals who see Greek art as far superior. Piranesi justifies his position in particular by situating the Romans as the heirs of the Etruscans, a people he describes as both more ancient and more gifted than the Greeks. The collection is dedicated to Pope Clement XIII, whose patronage enabled Piranesi to publish his great collections in the early 1760s. The generosity of the sovereign pontiff contributed greatly to the fact that Piranesi was able to produce such richly illustrated volumes, particularly those which were large and expensive. Atlas folio, (544 x 398 mm). 38 engraved plates including 4 folding and 8 double-page spreads, double engraved title-page in Italian and Latin, portrait of Pope Clement XIII. Parallel Latin-Italian text [WITH:] Second work: engraved frontispiece, 9 double-page plates (plates IV-IX numbered in ink), engraved head-and tailpieces (browning and foxing, mainly marginal, plates 4-9 of the last work with marginal dampstaining, last plate with two marginal repairs touching the engraving). Bound in late nineteenth-century half morocco, spine gilt, title gilt to spine, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (some wear). Provenance: Richard Moreland, Jr. (late nineteenth-century armorial bookplate); John Tiranti & co, 13 Maple Street Tottenham Court Road, London (early twentieth-century antiquarian bookseller's label).
