TILLI, Michelangelo (1655-1740). Catalogus plantarum horti Pisani. Florence: Tartini and Franchi, 1723. First edition of this important documentation of Pisa's botanical garden, founded c. 1543, one of the first in Europe and preserving its original layout to this day, here illustrated from a bird's eye view. Tilli's studies were so highly regarded at the time that one of his colleagues, Pier Antonio Micheli, dedicated the genus Tillaea of the Crassulaceae to him; Linnaeus accepted the name and cited Tilli's Catalogus in his Species Plantarum (1753). Folio, (360 x 250mm). Portrait of the author, 2 folding plans depicting the botanical garden, 50 plates of plants, vignette to title, printed in red and black, half-title, uncut (browning and spotting, repaired tear to half-title).
