FOLENGO, Teofilo (1491-1544). Opus Merlinicocaii poetae mantuani macaronicorum. Toscolano: Alessandro dei Paganini, 1521. Composite copy by the famous bibliophile Joseph Knight (1827-1907) of this satirical work accompanying Imberti's 1585 edition with 53 sought-after full-page illustrations from the first illustrated edition printed in Toscolano by Paganini in 1521. The volume contains Folengo's entire oeuvre: the Zanitonella (a series of 21 poems on rustic life), the unpublished Moscheide (a poem in elegiac couplets on the battle of flies and ants in Homeric imitation), a Libellus epistolarum et epigrammatum and the Baldus in 25 books and 12,000 verses (twice as many as the first edition). 12mo, (137 x 176mm). Printer's device to title page, engraved vignettes in the text and engraved plates, addition of 53 plates (of 54) from Paganini's 1521 edition mounted and interleaved (trimmed, without the last two blank leaves called for by OPAC SBN). 19th century green morocco, spine gilt (some wear to extremities and joints).
