Florence: Giunti, 1583. Rare edition of the statutes of the Knights of St Stephen, an order founded by Cosimo I dei Medici in 1561 to fight the Barbary pirates. The emblem of the order, the red cross on a white field, is here painted in a contemporary hand on the back of the colophon. 4to, (220 x140 mm). Engraved vignette with Medici arms to title-page, engraved initials (a few spots, light browning) wormtrack from ff. A to F2 not touching text. Contemporary full vellum binding. (1)
