BOCCACCIO (1313-1375). Il Decamerone. Florence: Giunta 1527 (but Venice: Pasinello, 1729). Elegant counterfeit of the 1527 edition, printed in only 300 copies and published at the request of the English consul Joseph Smith, reproducing the typeface and printer's device of the original version but correcting errors in pagination. 4to, (250 x 180mm). Printer's device on title page and colophon with fleur-de-lis supported by two putti; an uncut, wide-margined copy (wormhole to first two leaves touching text, otherwise good copy). Contemporary carta rustica binding, spine lettered in manuscript. Provenance: ex libris Ludovico De Gobbis (20th century). (1)

Ritratto inciso di Boccaccio al frontespizio. Titolo inciso ripetuto nei 3 volumi. Targa araldica (con un grifone coronato da un conte) ritagliata e incollata al verso del primo titolo e alle carte finali degli ultimi 2 volumi.

Cornici concentriche in oro, quella esterna con decorazione a volute, quella interna a filetto con fleuron agli angoli. Al centro dei piatti la "Fortuna" cavalca un delfino e il motto VIRBIAM SERVO. Carte 95, 1 bianca. Frontespizio racchiuso entro cornice xilografica con elementi fitomorfi e uccelli. Colophon a carta 95. Annotazione di mano antica alla prima carta. Alla terza carta nota di possesso coeva di G. Giacomo Bosso. Difetti alla legatura, internamente lievi tracce uso, qualche macchietta, esemplare genuino. Unito con: BOCCACCIO, Giovanni. Fiammetta Amorosa … Nouamente ricorretta. Venezia, Bindoni e Pasini, 1527 Carte 88 non numerate. Segn.: A-L8. Colophon a carta L8 recto. Frontespizio entro cornice xilografica con colonne, putti e altre decorazioni. Capilettera xilografiche su fondo criblé. Taglio a carta B4. Buona conservazione. Magnifica legatura veneziana della seconda metà del secolo XVI, eseguita a Venezia, del genere "aldino". L'impianto ornamentale ricorda le legature eseguite a Venezia dal legatore Andrea di Lorenzo, attivo tra il 1520 ed il 1550 ca. Hobson: "L'aspetto della Fortuna che i legatori italiani amano far risaltare è la fuggevolezza, perciò la mettono sul dorso di un delfino, simbolo della velocità". Di essa, si conoscono numerose versioni nelle varianti maschile e femminile. In Italia la Fortuna si trova prevalentemente su legature in marocchino bruno o rossiccio, ma anche bianco, della prima metà del XVI secolo, eseguite a Venezia, Padova e Bologna.”Sander 1058. Cfr. Ancient handwritten note on first leaf. On the third leaf contemporary note of possession of G. Giacomo Bosso. Defects on the binding, internally slight traces of wear, some stains, unsophisticated copy. Bound with: Fiammetta Amorosa … Nouamente ricorretta Venice, Bindoni and Pasini, 1527 88 unnumbered leaves. Collation: A-L8. Colophon on leaf L8 recto. Title page within a woodcut frame with columns, cherubs and other decorations. Woodcut Initials a criblé background. Cut to leaf B4. Good conservation Magnificent Venetian binding from the second half of the 16th century, made in Venice, of the "Aldine" type. The ornamental layout recalls the bindings made in Venice by the binder Andrea di Lorenzo, active between about 1520 and 1550. Hobson: The aspect of Fortune that Italian binders wished to emphasise was fleetingness. They did this by placing her on the back of a dolphin. […] Fortune standing on a dolphin back was a reminder to the reader that opportunity passes in a flash”. Numerous versions of it are known in male and female variants. In Italy the Fortuna is found mainly on bindings in brown or reddish morocco, but also white, from the first half of the 16th century, made in Venice, Padua and Bologna.
