Ottoman Costumes. BRINDESI. Costumes turcs de Constantinople. In folio, 510x410 mm. Binding in black bradel cloth, front plate with tooled decorated frames, title in the centre within a large festoon printed in gold, smooth back. Frontispiece printed in lithography with gilt ornaments. 22 colour lithograph plates by Regnier, Bettanier, Lemoine, Bour and others, from original drawings by Brindesi. On the inside cover Ex-libris ‘N. Dujardin-Van der Avoort’. Slight dampstaining to corners, small tear in margin of title and plate 5, insignificant traces of wear, good copy. First edition. The splendid, hand-coloured plates depict the costumes of the Ottoman court during the reign of Mahmoud II; Brindesi modelled his subjects by portraying the costumes on display in that museum, also documenting the attire of government representatives and military dignitaries. The first panel depicts Mahmoud II wearing ceremonial dress. The full title of the work is: 'Elbicei Atika. Musée des anciens costumes turcs de Constantinople' Elbicei Atika was the name of the costume museum in Constantinople, originally in the armoury of the seraglio. Leonora Navari: “There was in fact an actual museum of costume in Contantinople called the Elbicei Atika. Originally it had been located in the armory of the Seraglio [...]. Brindesi may be using the name metaphorically, or these plates may have been drawn from pieces in the Museum collection.”
