KUNISADA. Yakusha-e. Kabuki Theater scene. Tsubone Iwafuji and the servant Ohatsu. Diptych. Diptych, Ôban tate-e (vertical). 355x495 mm. Sign: “Toyokuni ga”, in a red Toshidama cartouche. Publisher: Hayashiya Shôgorô. Censors’ seal: Fuku, Mumatsu. Oval seal with zodiac date (Rat, with Uru-zuki). Signs of wear. Bright colours, some mica, fine gauffrage. Beautiful scene of the play Sumidagawa tsui no kagamon. The main plot is based on the cunning machinations of Tsubone Iwafuji, which lead to the suicidal death of the good and peaceful Onoe. However, the servant Ohatsu stood up for her mistress. Ultimately, Ohatsu avenges the death of her mistress by killing her evil rival with a sandal zori, which she had slipped in. On the left is Onoe Kikujirō II as the maidservant (Meshitsukai) Ohatsu holding an umbrella. At right, Sawamura Chôjûrô V as Tsubone Iwafuji.
