MALTA. Grand Masters of the Knights Hospitaller. Fr. Pietro di Cornigliano XXVIII Gran Maestro. Copperplate engraving measuring 310x215 mm. Some slight marginal stains. Good condition. Very rare depiction within an oval of the twenty-eighth Grand Master of the Order of Malta.Pierre de Corneillan was Grand Prior of Saint-Gilles and Grand Master of the Order of Malta in Rhodes from 1353 to 1355.De Corneillan spent much of his short period of rule (18 months) valiantly resisting the intentions of Pope Innocent VI, who had attempted to move the seat of the Order from Rhodes to a location closer to Palestine and the Mamluk possessions.

In testa data ‘Reponse du 18 Mars’ e Croce Patente stampigliata con iniziali ‘S A’. Bell’esemplare. ‘Bref de minorité’. Il Cavaliere di Malta La Croix de Chevrières, risponde a un ‘Monsieur le Baron’, relativamente al ‘Bref de Minorité’ che il comandante di Hautefeuille aveva chiesto nel 1795 al Gran Maestro Jean Emmanuel de Rohan per il figlio del suo corrispondente nel 1795. Indica quindi le modalità per entrare nell’Ordine di Malta, con speciale riferimento all’Olanda: «L'Ordre ne peut être considéré comme un Ordre étranger et puisqu'il est européen, pourquoi le roi de Hollande pourrait-il ne pas voir avec un véritable plaisir un Ordre qui a rendu tant de service à toutes les puissances, sans nuire à aucune et sans chercher de conquêtes ». La famiglia de la Croix de Chevrières, di antica nobiltà, annovera diversi suoi esponenti fra in cavalieri dell’Ordine Sovrano di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme. Importantissimo documento con preziosi dettagli sulle modalità di ammissione nell’Ordine. The Knight of Malta La Croix de Chevrières, responds to a 'Monsieur le Baron', relating to the 'Bref de Minorité' that the commander of Hautefeuille had requested in 1795 from the Grand Master Jean Emmanuel de Rohan for the son of his correspondent in 1795. It then indicates the procedures to entering in the Order of Malta, with special reference to the Netherlands: «L'Ordre ne peut être considéré comme un Ordre étranger et puisqu'il est européen, pourquoi le roi de Hollande pourrait-il ne pas voir avec un véritable plaisir un Ordre qui a rendu tant de service à toutes les puissances, sans nuire à aucune et sans chercher de conquêtes ».The Croix de Chevrières family, of ancient nobility, includes several of its members among the knights of the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The knight La Croix de Chevrieres was the Honorary archivist of the Order, like specified in the letter to ‘Monsieur le Baron’.

Pagina 3 bianca. Indirizzo sulla quarta pagina ‘Monsieur Laurence fils banquier … Poitiers’. A pagina 4, timbri e traccia di sigillo araldico in ceralacca rossa. Tracce d’uso. “L’abbè Savoye m’a dit qe’il vous ecriverait”. Maurice de Gournay, che si firma con la sua carica di ‘Major des gardes’ rassicura il banchiere di Poitiers riguardo l’ammissione dei suoi due figli nell’Ordine di Malta, nonostante l’opposizione di Signor de la Houssaye. Nell’incipit è citato un importante rappresentante dell’Ordine, che farà in seguito una prestigiosa carriera: l’Abbé Louis Savoye, Malta 1756, nel 1782 fu eletto Segretario della Venerabile ‘Langue de France’. Nel 1787 divenne ‘chapelain conventuel’; il 1 novembre 1793, Rohan lo nominò ‘Recteur de l’eglise collegiale de la Grotte de St Paul a Rabat (Malta).Il Duca Maurice de Gournay, 1741-1779, fu accolto nell’Ordine di Malta il 13 marzo 1742. Maurice de Gournay, who signs himself with his position as 'Major des gardes', reassures the Poitiers banker regarding the admission of his two sons into the Order of Malta, despite the opposition of Monsieur de la Houssaye. In the incipit an important representative of the Order is mentioned, who would later have a prestigious career: Abbé Louis Savoye, Malta 1756, in 1782 he was elected Secretary of the Venerable 'Langue de France'. In 1787 it became 'chapelain conventuel'; on 1 November 1793, Rohan appointed him 'Recteur de l'eglise collegiale de la Grotte de St Paul in Rabat (Malta).

The law concerns the management of assets confiscated from the Order of Malta on 19 September. The order had been suppressed in 1791. This law decreed the end of the Order of Malta in France.
