It was with the creation of this plate that the great enterprise of the "Vedute di Roma", which would occupy Piranesi for the rest of his life, began. It is probably not by chance that he drew and engraved the title of what was to become his most famous work on a large block of stone as if to signify the laying of a 'milestone' in his career as an artist, in which his training, represented by the term 'architetto', and his never-forgotten origin, represented by the term 'veneziano', take on great value.
