2 volumes in-plano. 610x470 mm. Contemporary red morocco binding, large red cardboard panel on the plates within a gilt decorated frame, gilt titles, rules and ornaments on the spines. Vol. I: 8 unnumbered pages with half-title, title page, notice to readers, dedication, 40, 90 unnumbered with 44 views and 1 geographical map. Vol. II: 4 unnumbered pages with half-title and title page, 100 unnumbered with 48 plates, 2 index. Typographic brand on the two title pages, with calligraphic initials, 'PD' and 'JD'. In total a geographical map of Sicily, 92 beautiful aquatints, some on a colored background. Copy without the list of subscribers, present only in some copies. Occasional foxing, sign of humidity on the margins, affecting some plates, some browning, however the copy is in good condition, with wide margins. Rare first edition, magnificently illustrated, edited by Jean Frederic Ostervald. The magnificent aquantints depict the most important monuments of Sicily and spectacular views of Syracuse, Catania, Messina, Etna, Palermo, Montreal, Termini Imerese, Sciacca, Agrigento, Taormina, etc. They are engraved by Franz Hegi, Theodore Henry Fielding, Newton Fielding and others after Forbin, Huber, Vauzelle, Lesamt, Bonington, Copley, Renoux and others, whose names appear in the plates. The plates are memorable for the skilful dosage of light and shadow which produces an evocative effect of three-dimensionality between bright skies, dark interiors and a series of other variably lit environments. The book was originally published in 24 parts and includes a historical summary by Gigault de La Salle that offers an overview of events from antiquity to his time. Abbey calls the work “the most ambitious of the colored aquatint books edited by J. F. d'Ostervald,” who produced a series of works on the picturesque, including two famous large editions focusing on the regions of France. To guarantee the quality of the aquatints, the work was printed in a limited number of copies. Abbey estimates that around 500 copies of the book were produced and comments that the book is “certainly rare, in this country at all events, only three copies being reported at auction in the last fifty years.”

Slight sign of humidity on the margin of two sheets. Otherwise good condition. Rare map consisting of 4 sheets creating a large unitary map depicting a vast territory known as ‘la Généralité de Paris’, the largest of the administrative districts under the Ancien Regime, which covered Paris and the surrounding region. It included cities such as Compiègne and Beauvais in the north and extended south to the Nivernais region.Bernard Jaillot was a French cartographer active in the first half of the 18th century. Son of Bernard Jean Hyacinte Jaillot and grandson of Alexis Hubert Jaillot, he was part of the prestigious Jaillot family of cartographers.

Vol. II: [II] 62 pp. Engraved vignette on titlepages, headpieces and engraved initial on the first volume, text on two columns. Nice copy. Rare First Edition of this important atlas, complete with its 15 hand-colored maps, which constitute Zatta's interpretation with corrections of the famous map of the United States drawn by John Mitchell in 1755, as explained by Zatta in the “Avvertimento dell’Editore”. The decorative title page with an internal map of Bermuda is followed by a general map of the thirteen colonies, by 12 sheets detailing the territories of the United States of which they form a large map, in this work there is also a map of the "New Land Islands and Cape Breton”, and one of “Baja d'Hudson, Land of Labrador, and Greenland with adjacent islands”. The maps were later included by Zatta in his famous Atlante novissimo.

Color photomechanical relief halftone on coated paper, mounted on cardboard. 90x175 mm. Below the image the number and caption with the title, on the reverse a complete description, all in English. In their original cardboard box. Defects on the box, stereographic prints in good condition. Colors seem to be still nice and bright. Rare complete series with one hundred numbered views. Castles, temples, gardens, monuments, views of cities, scenes of life and customs and curiosities are depicted. The Chicago University Library, which has a large collection of Stereograph Cards, has this series missing a 'Card'. A stereograph consists of two nearly-identical (often-photographic) images which form a three-dimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope. Truman Ward Ingersoll, 1862 – 1922, eminent photographer, is known for the stereoviews he published in the United States and other areas. In the early 20th century he also produced half-tone lithoviews. His company was named Ingersoll View Company.
