Rouen, Robert Vallentin, 1634, 326 pp. (in realtà 276, la paginazione salta da 247 a 298). 2 opere in 1 volume. 17 x 24 cm. Pergamena piena contemporanea. Piccolo foro di tarlo sulla prima di copertina, mancanze ai lacci. Lentiggini, una ventina di ff. bruniti, leggere macchie agli angoli, macchie marginali su metà dei fogli. 1) L'edizione originale della traduzione è del 1604. F. Hennebert, Histoire des traductions françaises d'auteurs grecs et latins pendant les XVIe et XVIIe siècles, pp. 151-152. Questa traduzione, pur essendo dell'inizio del XVII secolo, è ancora legata alla lingua del secolo precedente: "La lingua che parla è ancora quella di Amyot. [...] Per giudicarlo imparzialmente, dobbiamo confrontarlo con gli scrittori di cui ha seguito le tradizioni. La traduzione delle opere dei filosofi stoici all'inizio del XVII secolo è la continuazione della loro appropriazione da parte dei cristiani. 2) L'edizione originale risale al 1623. L'autore, Seneca il Retore, padre di Seneca il Filosofo, fornisce una raccolta di esercizi retorici latini: le controversie e le suasoire. Le prime erano di tipo giuridico, volte a dimostrare l'innocenza o la colpevolezza di un accusato, mentre le seconde erano di tipo deliberativo: consigliare ciò che era utile e sconsigliare ciò che era dannoso. L'opera è una fonte importante per la conoscenza della retorica latina.

La maggior parte degli esemplari di questa tipologia presenta al R/ le sole lettere RX F per ReX Francorum. Ci sono altri esemplari decisamente più rari con globetti e lettere. (braun-) fleckig, sonst nur sehr vereinzelt kl. Braunflecken u. insg. gut. Rare edition, currently untraceable in the trade. - With autograph dedication and poem signed by Karl Gottlieb Bock. Contemp. half leather with gilt stamped title to spine and rich spine gilt (rubbed, bumped, somewhat stained). - Front flyleaf with signed dedication of the East Prussian civil servant, poet and translator Karl Gottlieb Bock (1746-1830) for his friend, the higher regional court judge Troschel with 8-line poem in 2 stanzas. Below dedication from 1844 from Luise Troschel to her cousin Robert Eberstein(?) as well as his annotation. - Slightly browned due to paper, endpapers and title somewhat (brown-) stained, otherwise only very occ. small brownstains and overall good.
