FRANK THIEL (Kleinmachnow, Germania, 1966). "Stadt Berlin", 2000. Fotografia. Firmata e datata sul retro. Dimensioni: 175 x 238 cm. La fotografia qui proposta è strettamente legata alla biografia dell'artista poiché, sebbene Frank Thiel sia nato nella Germania dell'Est, nel 1985 si è trasferito a Berlino Ovest per studiare fotografia. La sua carriera professionale inizia così con uno studio approfondito della città e della sua trasformazione, la sua seconda ricostruzione. Il lavoro più caratteristico di Thiel è quello del primo periodo, quando riflette la caduta del Muro di Berlino e la progettazione di una nuova città sulla base delle fondamenta poste dalla sua precedente doppia centralità, ovvero quando documenta la costante trasformazione della capitale tedesca. Nato in una cittadina vicino a Berlino, nel 1985 si trasferisce a Berlino Ovest, dove frequenta la scuola di fotografia dal 1987 al 1989. Nella capitale tedesca ha documentato la sua storia sociale e politica. Thiel definisce Berlino "la città più giovane del mondo" e spiega che "la città soffre di un'overdose di storia... tuttavia non soffre dei suoi sedimenti come altre città europee, ma delle conseguenze delle sue eruzioni". Thiel è attualmente rappresentato in importanti istituzioni europee, tra cui il Museo Reina Sofia, la National Gallery of Canada, il Fotomuseum Winterthur in Svizzera, il Moderna Museet di Stoccolma, l'Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden di Washington e la Phillips Collection di Washington.
