L'œuvre est accompagnée d'une expertise du Prof. Luciano Anelli, 29 mars 2007, que nous reproduisons ci-dessous.Peinture très raffinée de matrice nord-européenne et rudolphienne, elle représente un épisode mythologique bien connu décrit dans les Métamorphoses d'Ovide (d'où la peinture semble évidente, par rapport à la culture de l'époque) ou d'autres légendes moins connues de la tradition grecque.À Prague, à la cour de Rodolphe II de Habsbourg, s'était créée une koinè artistique particulière et sophistiquée, qui exprimait un style propre, assez facilement reconnaissable - comme dans ce tableau - et dont les principaux représentants étaient Mattaus Gunderlach, Hans von Aachen, Joseph Heintz, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Bartolomeus Spranger.De nombreuses comparaisons stylistiques approfondies avec des œuvres connues et fiables attestent que l'œuvre examinée ici appartient au pinceau de Hans von Aachen (1552-1615) dans la phase pleine et mûre de son activité, lorsqu'il adhérait le plus intensément au milieu rudolfin.Des comparaisons peuvent être faites avec l'Annonciation de la Galerie nationale de Prague, avec la tête de la fille de l'artiste à l'ambassade de Tchécoslovaquie, l'Allégorie du triomphe de la cause impériale sur le temps à la State Gallery de Stuttgart, l'Assemblée des dieux à la National Gallery de Londres, tandis que des citations littérales sont faites de l'Allégorie de la paix à l'Ermitage de Léningrad.Dans l'œuvre examinée ici, von Aachen développe certes un thème iconographique d'une grande complexité, mais je dois dire qu'il s'efforce - dans la perspective d'une peinture raffinée et lambda - de rendre encore plus lambda une scène soutenue par un extraordinaire langage technico-stylistique.Le sujet est donc transformé en pur prétexte pour créer un véritable triomphe de nus féminins (le roi, qui était aussi accusé de sorcellerie et de rites étranges, se complaisait dans ces thèmes quelque peu obscurs, et d'autre part le pape, Rome et la Contre-Réforme étaient loin) qui posent dans toutes les contorsions permises au corps humain, faisant preuve d'une rare science anatomique.Et puis, von Aachen insiste sur la tactilité de l'épiderme, exploitant le jeu des lumières vives émergeant de l'ombre et de la pénombre, entre le miroitement des bronzes et de l'argenterie, et des allusions cryptées et répétées (le jeune homme de l'arrière-plan fuyant effrayé pourrait être Actéon ; le rideau et les objets brillants accrochés à gauche sont en réalité un prétexte purement pictural).
