I-III ont été écrits par Jacobi lui-même, les vol. IV-VI ont été édités par F. Köppen et F. Roth. Le tome IV a été publié en trois volumes (ici en 2 vol.). Jacobi devint le principal représentant des courants irrationalistes depuis le Sturm und Drang.
