PASCAL MOURGUE (France, 1943) for SCARABAT, Spain. Chair from the "Contraste" series, 1983. Wood and upholstery. Model illustrated in: P. Kjellberg, "Le mobilier du XXe siècle Dictionnaire des créateurs", p. 443 (Paris; Les Éditions de l'Amateur, 2000). Measurements: 90 x 73 x 52 cm. Chair with structure based on uprights and crosspieces of square section, combined to form an openwork scheme of great lightness, with seat and central part of the backrest upholstered in black fabric. Mourgue's "Hallmarks" series was originally published in 1983, and that same year was exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Pascal Mourgue studied sculpture at the Ecole Boulle, and later graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He began designing furniture in 1962, always prioritizing artistic integrity over commercial success. This love of art has led him to work in fields as diverse as sailboat design for Cartier, ornamental glass objects for Baccarat, architecture, painting and sculpture. It was not until the 1980s that he finally focused his career on home furnishings.
