Japanese Treasures from the Samurai Era

F ollowing the success of the first sale of this remarkable collection, offering a deep dive into the history of feudal Japan, Tessier & Sarrou, in collaboration with Cabinet Portier, presents the second chapter of the Patrick Liebermann Collection this April at Drouot. This auction is dedicated to tsuba, the finely crafted sword guards of the samurai.
Assembled over five decades, this sale features more than 240 tsuba (lots 35 to 276). It presents a new opportunity to explore this lesser-known art form in the West, showcasing a wide variety of styles, materials, and schools, with a strong selection of Edo-period tsuba.

Fifty years of passion

A significant portion of Patrick Liebermann’s collection was acquired in Japan, a country he visited around twenty times, leading to the presence of many rare pieces. A nature enthusiast, he was particularly drawn to motifs featuring animals, flowers, landscapes—especially views of Mount Fuji—and the world of the samurai.

A true work of art

Tsuba are far more than mere protective elements; they are genuine works of art, reflecting the refinement and expertise of Japanese artisans. Initially designed for functional purposes with minimalist aesthetics, they evolved during the Edo period (1600–1868) into highly decorative objects—sculpted, openworked, and sometimes inlaid with precious metals.

Their motifs, often inspired by nature, mythology, or folklore, reflect the status and tastes of their owners. Crafted in iron or sophisticated alloys such as shakudo (a mix of copper and gold) or shibuichi (a mix of copper and silver), tsuba represent a perfect balance of strength and beauty.
With extraordinary variety, these objects tell the story of samurai culture—revealing them not only as warriors but also as admirers of theatre, nature, and the society around them.

Among the highlights of the sale are:

- A pierced metal tsuba featuring two figures from Japanese mythology, the gods of wind and thunder, Futen and Raiden (lot 243, est. €3,000–4,000).
-  Another depicting a dramatic scene of a bird of prey watching a monkey and its young hiding in a bamboo forest near a waterfall (lot 112, est. €2,000–3,000).
- A striking tsuba illustrating the transformation of a kitsune (fox spirit) into a woman by a stream (lot 239, est. €2,000–3,000).

Patrick Liebermann

A curious globetrotter with a passion for world cultures, Patrick Liebermann was born in Strasbourg in 1948. During his first trip to Japan in 1970, the year of the Osaka World Expo, he impulsively acquired his first tsuba—without even knowing it was a sword guard. This initial fascination soon became a lifelong passion. Guided by the expertise of renowned dealers, he quickly became a seasoned collector. Over more than half a century, he built an impressive collection, always prioritizing quality.
