MOEBIUS Everything that lives communicates. Silkscreen print, 37.0 x 42.0 cm (image), heavy paper, signed in pencil, no. 20/300. Jean Giraud (1938–2012), comic book artist, creator of the famous “Western”-style series titled “Blueberry.” Under the pseudonym Moebius, he also created science fiction comics (e.g., “L’Incal” (1980 and onward), “The World of Edena” (1983–2001), etc.). His rather unsettling universe—a blend of space odysseys, aliens, and humans of all kinds—is decidedly phantasmagorical and delirious. His stories depict human societies projected into a terrifying future—entirely urbanized, ultra-technological, and technocratic, even totalitarian—all set against a backdrop of dizzying futuristic architecture... Starting in the late 1980s, as his themes softened, he embarked on a new direction, reflecting an ecological sensibility concerned with the preservation of animal and plant species. The silkscreen print presented here, part of the collection “Parapsychology” (1983), appears to date from this period. It depicts only the lower portion of the original drawing. The upper portion, depicting a bright white moon in a pitch-black night along with a stylized silhouette of a bird of prey, likely explains the title of the original work—a title that is less justified in this lithographed version. Prov. [Gita Brys-Schatan].
