359 - Stereoscopic view of William Frederick Milton Arny with Apache and Ute chiefs, New Mexico. c. 1867. Albumen print, 8.5 x 17.5 cm, mounted on cardboard. Rare. Portraits of identified individuals: “Gov. W.F.M. Arny (U.S. Indian Agent); W.E. William Frederick Milton Arny (1813–1881) was a U.S. Indian agent who served as Territorial Secretary of New Mexico from 1862 to 1867. He visited every tribe in New Mexico, southern Colorado, and southeastern Arizona, conducted a census of the Native American population, assessed their conditions, and submitted a comprehensive report. Ref. National Gallery of Art in Washington, which has a similar photograph in its collection. Included: Historical stereoview showing a group of nine men, likely noncommissioned officers in the U.S. infantry in the Southwest. (2 pieces)
