CLAES, Frans. 25 photographs of Antwerp following the V-bomb attacks during World War II. 1944. Silver prints, 12.5 x 17.3 cm, stamped: "Copyright/by Frans Claes/Canadalaan/Antwerpen," handwritten location notes on the reverse. Historical photographs showing the devastation caused by the bombing on October 13, 1944. Antwerp was abruptly torn from the euphoria of Liberation by a V-2 rocket. The toll was heavy; many people were killed or injured, and a large number of homes were destroyed or damaged. For six months, Antwerp remained under the deadly grip of the flying bombs. Most of the well-known photographs of the V-bombs in Antwerp were taken by Frans Claes (1913–2005) at the request of the City of Antwerp and with the permission of the British and American military authorities. Ref. Frank Heirman, “Never Before Has the Devastation Caused by V-Bombs Been So Clearly Captured in Photographs,” in De Standaard, October 28, 2021.
