Album containing approximately 700 photographs by the Danish diplomat Lars Tillitse in China. Circa 1920. Silver prints, including one large print measuring 25 x 38 cm and smaller prints measuring approximately 7 x 12 cm, mounted on cardboard. Bound in a large folio album with a silk cover (worn). Prints are in good condition. Scenes and views of various locations in China: temples, pagodas, landscapes, ceremonies, and local people; including the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, among others. A fascinating account of a trip to China by the Honorable Lars Pedersen Tillitse (1891–1970). Before becoming the face of Danish diplomacy in Tokyo, Lars Tillitse spent much of his career in China. He first served as Denmark’s Consul General in Shanghai (1930), representing Danish commercial interests there. He witnessed the rise in tensions between China and Japan, particularly during the Shanghai Incident of 1932. In 1939, he served as Denmark’s official representative to the Chinese Nationalist government (Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang). Thanks to his experience in China, he served as the Danish minister to Japan during World War II.
