ENSOR, James. Belgium in the 19th Century. 1889. Etching, 17.6 x 24.0 cm, Japanese paper, signed and dated on the plate (margins very slightly browned unevenly, a few spots on the margins, and handwritten number). Hinged at the upper edges. Mounted in a passe-partout. A powerful composition depicting King Leopold II hovering above a panicking crowd being charged by gendarmes. The French text alludes to the demands of the socialists. An extremely rare etching, as Ensor canceled the plate and stopped selling prints when he was made a baron in 1929. Even in virtually complete collections such as the KBR, this print is often missing. Rarely seen on the market and not offered at auction in the last 10 years. Excellent print in great condition. Ref. Taevernier 81. - Tricot 77. Provenance: [Paul van der Perre (20th c.), Brussels art dealer]. - Van Cauwelaert-Stubbe Collection.
