121 - SIMON, Armand Untitled. c. 1930 Pencil, black ink, 27.5 x 18.7 cm, vellum paper, sketch of part of a plan on the reverse (slightly browned, some foxing, remnants of a piece of red paper glued to the top edge). This drawing depicts two women with extremely elongated necks. One, drawn more schematically, has her mouth closed and her eyes wide open; the other, depicted in greater detail, is wearing an evening gown and a fur or feather stole. Even more surprising: in the background, a young girl, looking inspired, holds a double bass and a bow while her left leg passes through the instrument’s soundbox. Is this the gesture of a highly skilled virtuoso or the clumsiness of a young beginner? Or, more simply, the product of a “psychic automatism dictated by the unconscious” (A. Breton) on the part of the artist? Prov. [Gita Brys-Schatan].
