SIMON, Armand [Mme de Genlis...]. c. 1937. Pencil, black ink, 33.0 x 25.4 cm, vellum (small crease along the edge, minor stains in the margins, edges slightly browned). The work of the Countess de Genlis (1746–1830) is beginning to be rediscovered, following the reissue of her “Memoirs,” in the early 20th century, particularly in light of their ambiguous (unconsciously) sexual connotations. Indeed, some of her writings, which espouse a strict pedagogy inspired by uncompromising Christian principles, contain—admittedly without her knowledge—fantasized scenes of erotic cruelty. Undoubtedly, she is represented here by this young, naked woman with a joyful expression, holding a sharp knife in her hand, standing before the emaciated body of a tortured man whose stomach is adorned with small flowers—symbols, according to St. John of the Cross, of Christian virtues.... Prov. [Gita Brys-Schatan].
